Gerrish Depot. Digital photograph by Kenyon F. Karl on March 4, 1998
Gerish is located a short distance north of the Merrimack County Complex, which currently contains a small jail and a large nursing home. This complex was previously known as the Merrimack County Farm and Home. As such the historic complex must have generated almost all of the passenger and freight traffic handled by the tiny station at Gerrish.
The building appears to have been totally unused for many decades, and yet two of the broken windows have been supplied with fresh plywood, in what looks like an ongoing attempt to preserve this building from total destruction by vandals.
An E-mail message from Bob Spoerl at the NH Bureau of Trails indicates that the State acquired this building when it purchased the adjacent railroad roadbed, with the intent to preserve as a historic building. In the meantime the Bureau of Trails has also entered into an agreement with the Townline Trail Dusters to use it as a clubhouse. Bob Spoerl <[email protected]> Monday, May 04, 1998 8:33 AM
Trail access is available at the following points:
Gerrish Depot.
Access Road Crossing to boat ramp a short distance south of Gerrish Depot
A private road crossing perhaps a quarter-mile north of Gerrish Depot
Parking is available at and near the Gerrish Depot.
The road to the boat ramp a short distance south of Gerrish Depot provides an opportunity for a short side trip through the woods to the bank of theriver. Chemical toilets may be present on a seasonal basis. Dumpsters next to the boat ramp will certainly accept accumulated trail trash!
