East Jaffrey Depot. Digital picture by Kenyon F. Karl on July 15, 1998.
The East Jaffrey Depot is currently used for a business office.
Note that the name of the depot in the trail mileage chart reflects the name that was used for this settlement a century ago. However, the name of the nearby business district and surrounding settlement has since been abbreviated to Jaffrey.
Note that newspaper articles during 1999 suggest that a Rite Aid drug store will be built across the old railroad right-of-way on the north side of Route 124. The rail-trail will apparently be detoured around the front of this new building.
At first glance, the trail seems to end at the crossing just north of the East Jaffrey Depot. A closer look reveals that it does indeed continue north of East Main Street, although the trail surface is seriously obscured by junk and soil erosion. A bit further, users will notice a rough surface due to numerous railroad ties still imbedded in its very hard surface. The trail finally terminates at a crossroad just south of the Monadnock Plaza - adjacent to a paved truck road that can be used to reach the front of the plaza.
A Pizza Parlor was noted across the
street from the Depot. Toilets and water are presumably available
at the Pizza Parlor upon request during its operating hours.
The
Jaffrey
Public Library is located at 111 Main St., presumably a short
distance northwest of the East Jaffrey Depot.
Ample parking for trail users is presumably
available in the Monadnock Plaza parking lot, if trail users
choose an area that does not interfere with normal customer
parking or truck traffic within the plaza. A bakery that serves
coffee and pastries during the morning and afternoon hours is
located within the plaza. Toilets and water are presumably available within
the bakery upon request during its operating hours.
A MacDonalds Restaurant is located across
Route 202 from the Plaza. Toilets and water are available within
the Restaurant during its operating hours.
